YOUTH CONFERENCE.

A presentation by Homewood Pupils and the Civil Society.

Minutes:

A verbal presentation was made by Ms. J. Gandalfo from the Civil Society and Mr. T. Turner from Homewood School regarding the Youth Conference in February.

Ms. Gandalfo thanked the Town Council for supporting the Civil Society Initiative and stated that the Society realised very quickly that they needed to involve the voice of the youth in Tenterden rather than pontificating on what should be done for them.  After approaching Homewood School, a super six were initiated. Mr. Turner explained that The Tenterden 2030 conference is a collaboration between the Civil Society and Homewood School Sixth Form Centre. It is their intention to give the youth a voice and input into the future of Tenterden. Their aim is to open up a dialogue across the generations in Tenterden to discuss the environment, economy, and society, and to create an attractive, ecologically sustainable environment to add to the beauty and uniqueness of Tenterden.  By hosting annual cultural events they hope to bring much needed commerce and employment and to showcase talent and enterprise.

Ms. Gandalfo reported that the students wanted to hold the event in the Town Hall rather than at Homewood School to demonstrate their openness to join with the Town.  Leaflets will be distributed and adverts will go out on social media; they would also like to put a banner on the recreation ground.  Sixth form students will be asked to fill in a survey to give feedback at the conference. Speakers will be present on ecology, economy and employment for youth, and transport and implications for the future, linking with volunteer organisations in the town including Keeping Tenterden Green.

Ms. Gandolfo reported that Tenterden Schools Trust and Brissenden Trust have been approached for funding and any other funds forthcoming towards printing would be gratefully received.

Everyone has been invited to join them at the conference in the Assembly Room on Friday, 28th February 1pm to 4pm to hear the views of the community and join in the debate.
